A man has a right, I suppose, to pull down the building he once put up, and to raise another in' its place. If he should see fit to use sometimes the very stones which belonged to it, he would only be stealing from himself. I have done something very much like that.

In the course of the last fifteen years the times have changed, and with them the standpoint of students and teachers of design; and, though my point of View has not altered, my outlook has widened with experience. When it came to the revision of The Anatomy of Pattern with a View to a fifth edition, it seemed to me I had done all I could do to it, that it was past mending, and that the simplest thing would be to start afresh.

The present volume, however, though it covers the ground of the former one, and answers much the same purpose, is not the same, but really a new book upon the foundations of the old one.

It contains, indeed, all that was in the other, but otherwise expressed. Here and there an explanation or description, which, by revision after revision, had been reduced to the fewest and plainest words I could find, has been allowed to stand. '80 with the illustrations, the greater number of them are new. Such of the old diagrams as were essential to the purpose of the book have been drawn again, not merely on the larger scale allowed by the page, but in a simpler and more self-explanatory way.

  • I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is continually inspiring. And when I need to learn something new, it does not fail to teach. Yes, it was written over a 100 years ago, but pattern is pattern. There are only so many ways to cover a two-dimensional surface with motifs or lines, and instructions for so doing are excellent. I have had difficulty only with using them for making repeats of abstract paintings, a topic only arising a number of years after Mr. Day's classes ceased. I suspect that, had he encountered such, there would have been elegant instructions for accomplishing the task. I am so glad Dover is keeping this classic in print.
  • This was written in the early 20th century for wallpaper designers. It's been more interesting to me as a historical document showcasing how manufacturing and design evolved together than as a guide to designing patterns. But it does explain repeats, symmetries, etc, and I have been able to design some patterns on my computer based on something written nearly 100 years ago. The language is dated.
  • For anyone interested in the art of repeat patterns, this book is fantastic. Filled with lots of good old fashioned advice and methods, it shows a whole bunch of ways to build repeating blocks that you can then manipulate and decorate to your own ends. Techniques are easily adapted to use in a vector graphics program too, so you can follow instructions with a ruler and pencil or with your computer.
  • Great references to Surface Pattern Design.
  • This book promised to give the best information on pattern design and it delivered all that was promised.
  • My son does graphic design. He was very pleased with the book.
  • Not what I expected.
  • The book is in black and white print on cheap paper, images are small and low quality, it's almost only text, text, text. The info might be good, but the PATTERNS aren't. DON'T WASTE YOUR $$$
